The Writers' Room Experience

  • Starts 20 Aug
  • 70 British pounds
  • Central Methodist Hall, Manchester City Centre

Service Description

This workshop will give new writers a taster experience of a writers' room. It will replicate going into a writers' room where there is already a concept for a TV series in place, and then working collaboratively to develop it into a sellable premise with a story engine that can run and run. At the end of the workshop, writers will have a greater understanding of how ideas become series that they can use when creating their own series. ‘It took me a long time to hone my craft around story and plotting. For most writers, this is by far the hardest graft. I learnt an enormous amount from other writers in writers' rooms. I learnt the discipline that plotting across a whole series requires. I learnt to be bolder, to take more risks, to be prepared to fall on my arse. I learnt how much fun it can be to get out of your own head and play ‘yes and..?’ with other creatives. It transformed my work, and transformed how I approach story. I want to give a taste of that to new writers.’ Attendees will spend the morning focusing on idea development for a premise with a clear story engine. They will then spend the afternoon building on it by developing the structure of the pilot, considering story threads, getting into the story quickly, and considering the hook of the premise. Previous versions of this workshop have been online and focused on story. This time we will go beyond story, into plotting with more depth, to recreate a face-to-face, realtime, live, writers room experience. The workshop will be run by Scriptwriting North's Beth McCann and experienced TV Writer Rachel Smith. Among Rachel's TV credits, she was one of the guest writers in the room on Deep State 3, part of the team developing and writing the ten-part political spy thriller Red Election, and is currently developing an original thriller series with her writing partner.
